The most common hair care mistakes
Hair care mistakes are often made with the best of intentions. Find out here what you should definitely not do and what you should always pay special attention to.
Less is more
You don’t need styling foam, styling lotion, gel, wax and hairspray all together. Especially for natural looks, a good blow-dry with a high-quality hairdryer and your single favourite styling product is enough. Too many different products weigh down your hair and may leave sticky build-up.
Too hot to handle
Don’t make your hair go through hell by styling it at a too high temperature. We recommend using not more than 130°C on fine hair and 200°C only on thick coarse hair. In fact, styling over 200°C decreases the strength of your hair by up to 50% and makes coloured hair lose its vibrancy much faster.
Be sure to use high-quality styling appliances that let you adjust the temperature to match your hair type. This is very easy to do with the intuitive temperature guidance in the styling appliances of the Satin Hair™ Colour series. They were developed specifically for coloured hair and prevent it from losing its precious colour too fast.
No blow-dry? No go!
So you’re really, really in a hurry and need your hair to look its best, sleekest, shiniest and straightest – so much to do, so little time! Wouldn’t it be okay to skip the blow-dry just this once and straighten your hair while it’s still wet? Sorry, but the answer is: NO! Absolutely not.
Your hair should always, always be completely dry before straightening. But even if time is of the essence, the Braun Satin Hair™ Dryer will give you a quick, efficient, and shine-enhancing blow-dry that will prepare your hair perfectly for straightening. And it won’t take too long – after all, you don’t want that bones-in-the-desert dryness – just dry away the wetness and you’re ready to go.
Breaking your hair
Hair breakage can be caused by improper chemical processes such as home bleaching gone awry. But even seemingly innocent habits such as combing thick hair with a very fine comb or teasing your hair can cause it to break. The same goes for harsh brushing – or, in fact, brushing your hair while it’s still wet.
So be gentle to your hair and be sure to use styling and grooming tools that are gentle too, like the new Braun Satin Hair™ Brush which is specifically designed for healthy, gentle brushing without damage.
If your hair is very brittle and breaks easily you should check your diet: your hair needs a good supply of vitamin C, iron, protein (that’s what it’s made of, after all), biotin, zinc and folic acid.

Roughing it up
Many product instructions require you to towel-dry your hair. Actually, rubbing your hair with a towel may feel pleasant on your scalp, but it roughens up the cuticle, leaving the hair more porous and unprotected. Instead, you should blot your hair dry with a nice, soft towel. Afterwards, give it a good and gentle blow-dry with a high-end hair dryer.
When combing and brushing your hair, always make sure to go in the right direction – back-combing towards the roots and teasing are also hard on the cuticle. And, as for that scalp massage: your (or your partner’s) fingertips will do a much better job!
Too much of a good thing
You don’t need to shampoo your hair every day. If you like that freshly-washed feeling and want to give your hair a good blow-dry, try just rinsing it with clear water.
And here’s a tip for the sophisticates: instead of using tap water, rinse your hair with bottled mineral water or filtered water. The lime in tap water, especially in areas with “hard” water, leaves your hair dry.
