Other equipment every beginner's kitchen needs
The sharper, the better: Knives
Two knives in the house are enough for a start. What you need is: an all-purpose knife with a blade length of at least 16 cm. It will cut both fish and meat as well as larger quantities of fruit and vegetables swiftly and cleanly. In addition, you need a smaller vegetable knife to process fruit and vegetables more finely, and for garnishing purposes too.
Your practical base: A cutting board
You want a clean and sturdy surface to cut vegetables, fruit or meat. A large cuting board (app. 25 x 40 cm) made of plastic fits the bill best. It's so easy to clean and doesn't give germs a look-in.
The essential culinary tools: Cooking spoons
You always need a cooking spoon - whether you are stirring, frying or tasting. It is virtually indestructible, provided it's made of heat-resilient plastic or wood.
Peeled, it's so much tastier: The peeler
This is such a nifty helper when you need to peel fruit or vegetables, for example potatoes or asparagus. It is so much easier to use - especially for inexperienced hands. That saves time and trouble.
For the right twist: Whisks
To give a sauce that perfect smoothness, fold in cream or whisk eggs, a whisk is what you need. A classical baloon whisk made of sturdy wire, which can also handle a light pastry or pancake dough, is best.
Stainless metal in beautiful shapes: Pots
There's no need for a full range of pots straight away. Two or three are enough to begin with. Buy a large high pot for cooking large portions of spaghetti or a stew for six. Then you want a shallower one for vegetables. And finally, you should have a smaller pot to heat leftovers, milk and other small things.
Stews and fries: The pan
Pans are your life-long companions if they are of good quality. So it makes sense to invest a bit more in a well-sized stainless steel pan with a lid (diameter 26 cm). That investment will definitely pay off.
